Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation Drives Interdecadal Pacific Variability via Tropical Atmospheric Bridge

چکیده
Abstract The interdecadal Pacific oscillation (IPO) and Atlantic multidecadal (AMO), two leading modes of decadal climate variability, are not independent. It was proposed that ENSO-like sea surface temperature (SST) variations play a central role in the responses to AMO forcing. However, observational analyses indicate AMO-related SST anomalies tropical far weaker than those extratropical North Pacific. Here, we show is tied forcing by convective heating associated with precipitation over Pacific, instead there, based on an ensemble pacemaker experiments restored observation coupled general circulation model. modulates equatorial southwestern through exciting anomalous zonal interhemispheric asymmetry net moist static energy input into atmosphere. drives teleconnection, but it remarkably weakens thermocline damping effect. This study has implications IPO combined mode generated both local air–sea interactions, IPO-related global warming acceleration/slowdown independent AMO.

Western tropical Pacific multidecadal variability forced by the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation
Observational analysis suggests that the western tropical Pacific (WTP) sea surface temperature (SST) shows predominant variability over multidecadal time scales, which is unlikely to be explained by the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation. Here we show that this variability is largely explained by the remote Atlantic multidecadal oscillation (AMO). A suite of Atlantic Pacemaker experiments succes...
متن کاملImpact of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation on North Pacific climate variability
[1] In this paper, we found that the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) can contribute to the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), especially the component of the PDO that is linearly independent of El Niño and the Southern Oscillation (ENSO), i.e. the North Pacific Multidecadal Oscillation (NPMO), and the associated Pacific/North America (PNA) pattern. Using a hybrid version of the GFDL CM2...
متن کاملImpact of the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation on Tropical Cyclone Activity in the North Atlantic and Eastern North Pacific
Tropical cyclones (TCs) are among the most devastating weather systems affecting the United States and Central America (USCA). Here we show that the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation (IPO) strongly modulates TC activity over the North Atlantic (NA) and eastern North Pacific (eNP). During positive IPO phases, less (more) TCs were observed over NA (eNP), likely due to the presence of stronger (wea...
متن کاملDecadal Variability in the Terrestrial Carbon Budget Caused by the Pacific Decadal Oscillation and Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation
The terrestrial carbon dioxide (CO2) budget interacts with the Earth’s climate system on diurnal to centennial and longer time scales, making it critical for climatic prediction and stabilization. Atmospheric observations and global syntheses of CO2 data indicate that the terrestrial biosphere is one the major sources of interannual variability, but the underlying mechanisms operating on differ...
